Schley (SCH91400B) Universal Valve Spring Compressor Review
First off, I ordered this tool to help me replace the valve stem seals on a '97 Volvo 850 5 cylinder 2.4L engine and it was my first time doing this level of work on an engine. I had a friend give me a hand who had done this sort of thing before. The spring compressor which I rented from AutoZone did not attach to my engine so I had to look for alternatives. I read a forum post that another Volvo owner used this tool and liked it, so I pulled the trigger. My friend and I were both impressed with the tool. It came with a sticker that said something like; "Tools designed to make you money", so you know it's meant to be used on a regular basis.We used the cam cover bolts to mount the tool to the head. Since the bolts were much longer then would clamp the tool to the head, we had to use a few sockets as spacers. Not a big deal. With the abundance of engines and corresponding bolts in the world, I'm not sure why the other reviewer would think this would come with bolts for his Camry, let alone every engine in the world.
My only issue is the length of the handle. As it was, we added a two-foot breaker bar to get the proper amount of leverage. It was still a workout to hold the spring steady during reassembly with the breaker bar, but that's due to the springs, not really the tool itself, but a longer handle or breaker bar is a MUST.
One suggestion would be to increase the length of the tube pressing on the spring, so the amount of space to get to the keepers - would have been helpful since we left the engine in the car and it took some effort to wiggle ourselves into position to see what we were doing. Another suggestion would be to add some cotter pins to each end of the fulcrum rod, so it doesn't slide off the mounts. With the inline 5, we had it mounted pretty much at the ends of the rod to reduce the number of times we had to relocate the mounts. A few times the rod slid out of the holes and we had to readjust. Both suggestions are minor issues and are not needed to use the tool effectively. By the time we finished all twenty valves, we had gotten pretty good at it and know the tool is well worth the hundred bucks I spent. Might be a one-time use for a shade-tree mechanic, but still worth it.
