Thule 9007 Gateway Rear Mounted 3 Bike Rack Review

I purchased the Thule Gateway 3-Bike rack for a trip to the beach. When I got it, I decided to mount it on my Mazda MPV minivan as a dry run along with my family's 3 bikes. It took about 5-10 minutes to get the rack securely mounted onto the van. The factory Quick-Fit setting worked fine with the van. It could not have been easier to set the top hooks and tighten a little, then set the bottom hooks and the side hooks, then tighten all straps. I then put 2 adult bikes, 1 men's and 1 women's, and a kids BMX bike on the rack in about 10 minutes. No problems. I was able to mount the women's bike without a frame adapter bar, but it was mounted at a steep angle to the ground. I purchased the SpareHand Bike Frame Adaptor so I could mount the women's bike level.

We left for the beach the following weekend. The rack was on the van in 5 minutes. The bikes were mounted in another 10 minutes with minor issues getting the pedals, seats, and handlebars to clear each other. I put the men's bike on first as it was the easiest to install, then the women's bike with the frame adapter, then the kids bike since it had the least amount of room to fit over the carrier arms and cradles. Everything fit just fine. The carrier arms were set a little higher than horizontal before the bikes were mounted. With the weight of the bikes, they bent down slightly and ended up about level with the ground. After the bikes were on, I checked the straps again and retightened them. I ran the extra nylon strap through all of the bikes and the bike rack. I used Velcro strips to keep the front and back wheels from spinning while driving.

We got stuck in traffic about an hour after we left, after driving at speeds up to 75 mph on the highway and in some stop and go traffic in town. I got out and checked the straps. All were still tight and did not require any adjustments. When we arrived at our destination after 2 1/2 hours of driving all straps were still tight and the bikes were fine.

Overall the rack was very easy to install on the car (minivan), the bikes were relatively easy to mount, the saddle straps were easy to secure including the anti-sway cages, and everything stayed in place during the drive. I purchased a 15' long plastic coated braided cable with a padlock to lock the bikes and rack to the tow hook on the van. This was cheaper than paying for the Archway rack with the integral locking cable. I would recommend this rack to anyone looking for a trunk mounted 3-bike rack.

The only issues I had were: 1) one of the carrier arms was pulling away from the Fit Dial hub a little bit with all 3 bikes mounted and 2) the women's bike had 1 wheel hanging close to the ground when mounted on the rack. The carrier arm is secured using rivets and 1 screw. I tried to tighten the screw but it was stripped. I found it is screwed into plastic instead of metal. I removed the screw and reinstalled it using ThreadLock Blue. It stayed tight after that. The bike wheel was hanging low because of the frame adapter bar, not the bike rack.
