Icon PDX Rain Bibs - 3X-Large/Black Review

At the time I wrote this review, I had only worn the rainpants for a short time in a moderate rain. Last week I wore them in a downpour for an hour on the freeway. They do leak in the middle, not a lot - my jeans were damp rather than soaked. But it they were distinctly uncomfortable for that part of the ride. Rainpants costing over $100 shouldn't leak at all. I suspect that you could treat them with seam sealer and plug the leak - but seam sealer wears out after a while & you'll only notice when you get that cold trickle "down there."

Here in Seattle, you've only got two choices: either you ride in the rain or you ride in August. Rainsuits are more popular than sunglasses. Not sure how it happened, but my old pair of neoprene rain pants shrunk over the summer. Needed a new pair, did my homework & decided on the Icon Pdx's.

The ads are right: these don't suck. They're very well made, lots of adjustment straps, etc. The zippers are all the nearly-waterproof type, well protected by flies. All the snaps, straps, zippers, toggles, etc are big enough to use while wearing gloves. Overall construction leads me to believe they'd take a lot of abuse (AKA "real life") without a problem.

The stirrups are removable, I like that - stirrups are a bit of a pain, and the Pdx's legs have drawstrings on the bottom which keep the pants from riding up in the wind anyway.

The legs are long enough for a tall guy with his legs stretched out. The pants are fully lined with a breathable mesh that should keep them (and me) from sweating. The outer pockets are as close to waterproof as you can get while still allowing easy access, a little on the narrow side though. I can't get my paws into 'em even without my gloves on.

Two nits keeps this from being a five-star review:

They're a little tight in the waist for 2X's - oh, they go around my ample middle with a little slack, and they've got room for my chaps - however they're not big enough to go over my leather jacket. I prefer bibs that are sized to go over my jacket, but they work well enough with a waterproof over-jacket on top.

Nit Number two is the supposed reflective graphics. There are only a couple, they're small, and both of them are Icons. errr, I mean "graphical representations of the company name" (which just happens to be 'Icon.') One of them is basically in my lap & if a car's headlights can actually hit it I'm probably no longer shiny side up.

I'd prefer some reflective stripes instead, and I really don't like having a lot of logos pasted all over my body. If they want me to endorse their product, they can talk to my agent, same as anybody else. ::cough::
